Despite the rise of various data services, SMS still makes most of the non-voice revenues for the carriers. According to the recent report from Research and Markets, SMS contributes between 75 and 80 percent of non-voice ARPU. Voice calls still lead the way, with carriers making up to 80% of revenues this way. However, this could change with wider adoption of 3G networks and VoIP services.

The same report also predicts the total increase of mobile subscribers worldwide by 2012, from 2.65 billion to 4.81 billion. Most of the new mobile phone users will come from Asia and the mentioned region will account for 50% of total subscriber base by next year.
