China Mobile working on its own AppStore?

File this under rumors, but it seems that the world’s largest mobile operator in terms of number of subscribers is working on its own AppStore. When you think about it, it makes perfect sense for China Mobile to do this. With that many subscribers, they would certainly want to increase ARPU by offering subscribers additional apps they could use on their handsets.

At the moment, China Mobile is applying tight management of their content catalogue. With the introduction of some kind of AppStore, they might let the developers and publishers upload their apps and games and let consumers show what’s hot and what’s not. This is not to say, China Mobile would loose control. Quite the contrary, they could make a hybrid system which would highlight products offered by the carrier’s partners, while leaving space for third-party content as well.

And that’s about all we know at this stage. Hopefully we’ll have more to share in the near future. Stay tuned in the meantime…
