Blip.tv embedded videos now compatible with iPhone!

While Adobe works on porting their Flash 10 client to Android and other ARM-based smartphones, Steve Jobs is still adamantly keeping Flash from ever hitting the iPhone or iPhone 3G. Without an official Flash solution on the iPhone, many embedded videos are out of reach for video-consuming iPhone users. Today, Blip.tv is changing the game by making their embedded videos iPhone-compatible.

Sure, embedded YouTube videos are, for the most part, viewable on the iPhone. But, aside from YouTube, embedded videos are largely out of reach for iPhone users. That’s where Blip.tv’s .m4v QuickTime stream comes in.

Blip.tv has announced that, thanks to a bit of “magic,” they’ve come up with a way to get their embedded videos onto iPhone and iPhone 3G displays. Blip CEO Mike Hudack told Wired.com:

“We think it’s very important that iPhone users be able to enjoy a full Web experience, including video playback. Just as important, show creators should be able to distribute video everywhere that people watch video. This is a meaningful step forward.”

Blip.tv works their “magic” by redirecting iPhone users to a special version of the embedded video, coded in the .m4v QuickTime format that is supported by the iPhone OS. Newly uploaded videos will be converted into the .m4v QuickTime format, but previously uploaded videos will have to be manually updated by their publisher to support iPhone-viewing.
