Research says Mem cards are biggest revenue-generating accessory

ABI Research (via an article on Mobile Europe) is saying that memory cards deliver the greatest revenue of all accessories – more so than even chargers and batteries.

Of course the reasons are not hard to fathom – most devices are media-centric these days, with media such as images, video and audio filling up peoples’ handset memory – in comes the card!

Apparently memory cards also deliver the best revenue return too – which is interesting, as the prices have dropped through the floor in recent months.

Interestingly, a comment is also made about the low-capacity cards that handset manufacturers also ship – personally I think that some of the sizes of these cards (256MB for example) are quite ridiculous, and they’d be better having no card and a cheaper device. But in the complex device economics and subsidy situation that exists between Operators and Vendors, this may never happen.
