SMS in GMail now works!

Roughly a month ago we talked about GMail’s new feature, which allowed users to send text messages to mobile phones right from the chat window. This in turn made leaving the conversation virtually impossible. However, at that stage, some bugs still occurred and Google decided to pull off the service. Now it’s back, and it’s here to stay to hunt you ’till you die. 🙂

Anyway, when you’re chatting via SMS, you get a dedicated phone number which receiver will see. Furthermore, you don’t actually have to chat with the person on the other end. To stop the conversation, simply text “BLOCK” and that’s it.

At the moment, the new GMail feature is a U.S. only “thing,” but I guess other countries will get to try it out in no time. Particularly, I would expect to see the service debuting in UK during the first quarter of next year (not that we have any inside information, it’s just the way it usually goes). In the meantime, Americans should stop chatting or at least keep their mobile phone numbers private. 😉
