LG sells 5 million LTE smartphones worldwide; still way behind its lofty goal of 35 million sold this year

LG announced that it has sold five million LTE smartphones worldwide. Perhaps the most interesting part about this news is not the five million figure, but the amount of handsets the Korean manufacturer sold in the month of July. LG sold 1 million devices last month, which isn’t too bad for a company searching for its identity in this market. It turns out, the most popular of the devices was the Optimus LTE, selling two million units.

Surprisingly, that big slab LG calls the Optimus Vu, managed to find itself in the hands of 500,000 people. Of course, after posting these numbers, the company believes it will see a steady increase, adding that “sales of global LTE smartphones are expected to increase ten-fold this year from last year.” This is a different tone, considering how the company in its earnings a few weeks back said the mobile business was still a struggle.

LG, which went from being a real competitor to Samsung to then becoming the little brother of the two South Korean companies, has really shown some gumption as of late. The company boldly stated an ambitious goal a few months ago, proclaiming its going to push for 35 million smartphones this year.

Anyway, with phones like the Optimus 4XHD, LG is looking to change the mindset of consumers when it comes to being a viable option. Ultimately, time will tell whether or not customers will flock to LG. I for one hope the company can get its act together so there will be more competition for the likes of Samsung and Apple.
