Apple’s Map team manager allegedly given his walking papers

A report in AllThingsD claims Apple has quietly fired Rich Williamson, head of the mapping team. This move was allegedly made by Eddy Cue, Senior Vice President  of Internet Software and Services. Cue has taken over Apple’s Siri and Maps projects now that former iOS chief Scott Forstall has left the company.

Apple’s Map application has been the subject of intense criticism after it launched with iOS 6 earlier this year. The Maps app was much less detailed than the older, Google Maps version and contained glaring errors that made it the butt of internet jokes. Tim Cook publicly apologized for the debacle and said  the company “will keep working non-stop until Maps lives up to the same incredibly high standard” that people come to expect from Apple.
