Redbox Instant Launches to the Public, Offers $8 a Month Unlimited Streaming

Verizon is bringing its video-streaming service, Redbox Instant, to the public today. Many are familiar with the big red video-store-in-a-box, and today the service makes its way into Netflix territory after a three-month beta test.

Redbox Instant’s streaming service is being offered at $8 a month, and  will offer access to over 4,000 streaming movies, and is coupling four free one-night DVD rentals into the deal, allowing customers to have the best of both worlds. Some of Redbox’s partners include Warner Bros, Epix, Viacom MGM and Lion’s Gate Entertainment.

Redbox will be making its way to the Xbox 360 as well, and will soon be coming to iOS and Android, as well to Smart TV sets produced by Vizio, LG, Samsung and Google TV.

While Redbox is definitely going to be stepping on Netflix’s toes a bit, Redbox Instant CEO Shawn Strickland told GigaOM that the company will remain focused on movies, instead of Netflix’s library which contains many TV series and original programming. Redbox may take that route in the future, but for now will remain focused on its current offerings.
