IPCom made some lofty demands of HTC recently, primarily that they pay licensing fees for UMTS technology in Windows Mobile and Android handsets. Are the demands justified? German courts say so, and ruled in favour of IPCom in late February. HTC (and now Google, since a separate complaint has been filed) is in a position where they have to negotiate fees, or face threats of shutting down sales in Germany. IPCom is multinational, so it’s entirely possible that this case sets precedent elsewhere, at very least in Europe.
