Telus to Unveil ‘Device Protection Plan’ This Month

telusTelus is gearing up to launch what they’re calling a ‘Device Protection Plan’ on September 10th. In essence, the plan is insurance for your device… and it’ll run you $7 per month. Great, another ‘add-on’, right? 🙂

Although I’ve never lost a device to theft, loss or damage (knock on wood), I could potentially see this extra insurance coming in handy. Manufacturer warranties often do not cover the entire term of your contract, and if you’ve had a device damaged, lost, stolen or otherwise in the past, this might be something to look at. Even water damage and repairs due to regular use would be covered.

If your device needs to be replaced, your deductible (replacement fee) would run you $40, $80 or $150 depending on the ‘tier’ of your device. New devices would arrive within 2 business days, ready for OTA activation.

You know, now that I think some more about it… $7 per month… hmmm… Ok, so lets say I pay $7 per month for a year and a half and then I unfortunately lose my device. That’s $126 I’ve paid so far. Plus, chances are my device would be in the higher-end ‘tier’ of their scale… So, tack on another $150 to replace it. Add on to that the fact that I’d probably want a different device anyways to replace the ‘old clunker’… Jeez, that’s $276 to get me a new device I don’t even want anymore. I’d call that an old-fashioned cash grab 🙂

Your thoughts?
