ABI Research: Half of US mobile phone users interested in femtocells?

ABI Research - femtocellsFile this under “hard to believe,” as I doubt the majority of mobile phone users even know what femtocells are. Sure, we all want the improved coverage, but buying a femtocell base station is completely another thing. Coverage issue is a thing that carrier should solve, not to trick us into buying an additional piece of hardware in order for the service they sell to work properly. My rant stops here…

ABI Research conducted a survey of 1000 consumers in the United States, and the results suggest that operators are losing out on a significant portion of the market due to their lack of initiative in marketing femtocells or educating consumers on a mass-market scale. Key finding are:

  • Close to 25% of respondents to our survey were “very” or “extremely” interested in using a femtocell.
  • A further 31% were “somewhat” interested.
  • Bringing the total to more than 50%.

Are these results relevant? In a word – NO! At least I don’t think so… You can get more details from this page on ABI’s website.
