To kick off their latest holiday content, Cryptic Studios has launched an iPhone application for their massively multiplayer online role-playing game, Champions Online. The Champions Online Companion allows you to send and receive in-game mail, see which of your friends are online and what they’re up to through their activity streams, view and adjust your character portrait, and review your powers and items. There’s also a section for game news and announcements, so you’ll know if there’s server downtime or new content available.
MMOs present a persistent virtual world that’s always in motion, making apps like this growingly popular for those times when players have to tear themselves away from the keyboard. World of Warcraft has also hopped onto the iPhone bandwagon, but even smaller outfits like Fallen Earth have managed to create a mobile app.
I’ve actually had some time to try out Champions Online, and it’s pretty crazy the kind of heroes you can make – mine was Sir Reginald Blastylad Mk. 3.2, a robot with an old-timey twist, complete with top hat, monocle, moustache, and suspenders.
