Mplayit: People are more willing to pay for mobile apps than you think

Mplayit, the Facebook application/service that lets users discover and share new and interesting mobile apps, released their latest mobile app analysis, showing that more than one-third of users across all top mobile platforms are interested in paid applications. According to Mplayit, that goes against conventional wisdom that users aren’t willing to pay for anything.

Here are the key findings:

  • Across all device platforms, approximately 35% of users are interested in paid applications.
  • 57% of the most popular apps on Mplayit’s iPhone (Arcade or platform) are paid, compared to 33% on BlackBerry and 16% on Android.
  • BlackBerry users are willing to pay the biggest premium for apps, with a median price point of $5.99, compared to $2.72 on Android and $1.99 on iPhone.
  • In terms of the popularity of games, their popularity continues to grow on iPhone, making up 68% of the most popular apps. Android games have seen a slight increase in popularity compared to the previous month, but are still dwarfed in comparison to iPhone and BlackBerry.

The conclusion is (as the title says) – the myth that consumers aren’t willing to shell out money for great mobile applications is false. Michael Powers, Mplayit CEO, concluded: “If you’re making a quality app, don’t be afraid to charge for it.”
