Handmark scored a new client for its app development business. Again it’s a media company, Lee Enterprises, that wants to make smartphone apps out of its properties.

Those unfamiliar, myself included, should know Lee Enterprises provides local news, information and advertising primarily in midsize markets. The company has more than 50 daily newspapers and online sites, as well as 300 specialty publications in 23 states, reaching more than 4 million readers daily; online sites attract nearly 16 million unique visits monthly, and its weekly publications are distributed to more than 4.5 million households.

The first Lee property that will get its mobile app is The St. Louis Post Dispatch for which Handmark prepared a new Cardinals Baseball 2010 mobile application, providing access to the latest Cardinals insight, gossip, breaking news and photos. The application is available for multiple platforms — including iPhone, BlackBerry and Android — and it costs $2.99. Non-iPhone users can grab the app by texting “CARDS” to 46275, whereas those with iPhones can grab it from the AppStore.
