Google updates mobile search for iPhone and Android with slick search refining options

Google has been continually updating and adding features to its desktop web search services. And, for the most part, they’ve been keeping pace on the mobile search side of things with iPhone and Android-optimized mobile search options. Today, the search giant has flipped the switch on yet another mobile search feature that’s aimed at giving iPhone and Android users a more desktop-like experience on their respective smartphones. The company today announced that they’ve revised the mobile search page with a new search refining tool, accessible through a subtle arrow button to the left of the search box.

The idea behind the new feature is to “give you the same comprehensiveness and relevance as when searching with Google on your computer, but also a consistent look, feel, and overall user experience.” When searching on Google from your iPhone or Android smartphone, you’ll see the familiar mobile optimized search results page. What’s new is the new button to the left of the search box. Tap that button and the page will expand a filter menu to the left of the search results, offering search options for News, Products, Updates, and Everything. You can also filter chronologically by Latest, Past 24 Hours, Past Week and so on.

One thing you should know is that the filter menu crowds out the search results. The search results are still accessible by swiping to the left (panning to the right). But, given most smartphone’s limited screen real estate, something’s going to have to give.
