Opera Software announced plans to upgrade mobile Web browsing by developing Opera 9 for mobile phones in all major platforms. The upcoming Opera Mobile edition includes the latest in PC browsing features such as Widgets and Intelligent Zoom.
Opera 9 on mobile phones will add completely new dimensions to navigation. Users can seamlessly alternate between viewing modes to get a birds-eye perspective or dive into the content they want. Users have the choice to see an overview of a Web page or adapting the page to the width of the screen. As first seen with the Opera browser for Wii, Intelligent Zoom allows users to then zoom in directly to a selected area. Read the full article »

In 3GSM, Announcements, Motorola, Symbian
We thought Motorola (NYSE: MOT) dropped Symbian. After all, we haven’t seen any Moto Symbian-powered device for couple of years. But… we were wrong. At the 3GSM they presented their new Symbian UIQ 3.1-based MOTORIZR Z8.
It’s kind a sporty, and has all the multimedia features of a solid Symbian-powered device. The Z8 supports HSDPA (and UMTS of course), has a 2MP camera with 8x zoom (digital), 2.2″ screen, 90 MB of internal memory and unlike most Nokia (NYSE: NOK) smartphones supports A2DP Bluetooth stereo. The way I see, the new device will compete with such devices as Sony Ericsson (NYSE: SNE) Walkman-branded phones or Nokia 5500 sport.
Interesting is the fact that this is the first non-touchscreen UIQ-based device. I’m sure that Sony Ericsson will also follow this way and will release a similar device.
We haven’t got the time to check out the device more thoroughly. We took only two photos. And you can get full specs of the new MOTORIZR Z8 here.
P.S. The Z8 sports the powerful Discretix‘ DRM solution (yes, we love our sponsors).

In 3GSM, Announcements, General
Next Generation Mobile Networks (NGMN) initiative got new members. Founded by companies like China Mobile, KPN Mobile NV, NTT DoCoMo, Orange, Sprint (NYSE: S) Nextel, T-Mobile (NYSE: DT) and Vodafone, the group’s goal is to create a virtuous cycle of investment, innovation, and adoption of mobile broadband services with competitive price-performance ratios.
New members include Alltel Corporation, AT&T, SK Telecom, Telecom Italia, and Telefonica SA as new members, Airvana Inc., Huawei, LG Electronics, NEC, Samsung, Starent Networks, and ZTE USA as sponsors, and the University of Surrey as an advisor.
Still, where’s Nokia (NYSE: NOK)? Sony Ericsson (NYSE: SNE)? Motorola (NYSE: MOT)? Anyway, it’s good to know that things are moving. Just, it would be nice to finally have a single standard for mobile communications.
