Charlie Demerjian hits up the Nokia Booth at CES

By Stefan Constantinescu on Sunday, January 14th, 2007 at 9:18 PM PST
In CES 2007

One of my favorite writers at the inq, known for his lengthy rants and sarcastic humour, Charlie takes a stab at the three devices Nokia (NYSE: NOK) unleashed at CES. The N800, N93i and the N76. Conclusion: He wants an N76.

Other than that, there is not much here, it is fairly simple. I like simple in my phones though, I just want one to talk to people on and store numbers. If I had to replace my old beat up 6820, this would be on the short list. The longevity of that phone, coupled with the solidity of the N76 I was playing with is a good sign. It will cost about $399

The things Nokia was showing were all over the map. All had at least some media player functionality, and none had any glaring defects or functionality missing. The proof is in the using, but so far, they are worth a long look.

Tommi doesn’t get the Nokia CES Blog … neither do I

By Stefan Constantinescu on Sunday, January 14th, 2007 at 7:44 PM PST
In CES 2007, Financial/Corporate News

After piloting event blogging with From the World blog last December, I thought we had learned how to do it right.

Well, not quite. Here’s Nokia Nseries at CES Blog (click "Blog" from the link list at the top)

Is it just me or is there something wrong about it?

Here’s how I’d improve it:
– posts in reverse chronological order (the core definition of a blog)
– permalinks (if you are not linkable, people can’t link to you)
– RSS feed (so that people like me can subscribe)
– comments (not a requirement for a blog, but would enhance the content dramatically. See TechCrunch poll)

I can’t even link to the blog, or the webcast of Nokia (NYSE: NOK) CEO speaking at CES. Urgh… Could somebody upload it to YouTube?

Source: Tommi’s S60 Application Blog

I know you want to say it but you can’t, so I will. The Nokia CES blog was crap.

It was too flash based, the content was hard to get to, it was more bling then content. The Nokia World 2006 blog was done so well it even amazes me how these things could’ve taken such a turn for the worst. Do you know why the Nokia World 2006 blog rocked? They used a standard blogging engine, Flickr, and YouTube to share information. It was beautiful and I applauded them for it. The same "Web 2.0" technologies that Nokia was talking about in all their presentations was used to make the Nokia World blog.

This CES blog however was pure garbage and a waste of time. Tisk Tisk, I was expecting so much more.

On January 8th Nokia published 9 Press Releases, let’s review them shall we

By Stefan Constantinescu on Sunday, January 14th, 2007 at 6:42 PM PST
In CES 2007, Devices, Financial/Corporate News

PR Number 1: Nokia Shares Vision of Convergence with New Internet Collaborations, New Products at CES 2007

This is basically a summary of all the announcements Nokia (NYSE: NOK)’s CEO Olli-Pekka Kallasvuo made during his speech which I suggest you watch.

PR Number 2: Nokia Nseries gets trimmer in 2007 with the Nokia N76

Everything you need or want to know about the N76 you can check out here at GSM Arena which lists nothing but specs. That is what we all care about don’t we?

PR Number 3: Take the internet to new places – the Nokia N800 Internet Tablet

It’s formally launched at CES but we got the pictures and reviews a few days prior. Instead of reading this press release I recommend you watch this video from ThoughtFix.

PR Number 4: Skype and Nokia to develop novel Internet-calling experience

At the CES conference in Las Vegas today, Skype and
Nokia announced a collaboration to develop a new mobile Skype(TM)
experience on the Nokia N800 Internet Tablet, introduced earlier today.

The collaboration
builds on the familiarity and richness of desktop Skype and makes it
mobile. The Nokia N800’s small size and easy wireless connectivity
frees Skype users from their desktop, allowing Skype conversations to
take place anywhere, as long as there is an available wireless Internet
connection. Packed with features such as Wi-Fi and Bluetooth phone
connectivity, hands-free properties, webcam, media support and
messenger keyboard, the Nokia N800 makes Skype conversations
captivating experience at home, at work and on the move.

"Skype
is the recognized leader of Internet communications with over 136
million registered users worldwide," said Ari Virtanen, Vice President,
Convergence Products, Nokia.
"Nokia’s new N800 Internet Tablet is
designed for mobile Internet. Together, we can develop communications
devices beyond expectations."

"Skype
is very happy to be partnering with Nokia," said Eric Lagier, Director,
Business Development, Hardware and Mobile, at Skype. "Working with the
leading mobile-handset manufacturer puts us in a unique position to get
Skype to the mobile masses.  With the introduction of the Nokia N800,
we are positioning Skype as the centerpiece of Internet conversations
on this WiFi-centric device. The Nokia N800 is an excellent platform
for taking Skype conversations beyond the PC."

The first implementation on the Nokia N800 is expected to be made available for download by the end of first half of 2007.

So everything fought for by pushing SIP they basically threw out the window and said "You know what … the people want Skype, and we’ll give it to them."

Bravo!

PR Number 5: Unleash your story in video with the Nokia N93i

Instead of reading that, why not watch a Nokia employee talk about the N93i?

You know wait a minute that’s a fantastic idea … why not make video press releases?

PR Number 6: Nokia and Six Apart’s Vox Make Creating and Sharing Content a Snap with Nokia Nseries Multimedia Computers

Did this really need a press release? Shame on Nokia for only supporting 2 blogging platforms, both owned by Six Apart! Yes I use TypePad, a Six Apart product, but it doesn’t mean the world does! What about WordPress support? Blogger support? Spaces support?

There are so many blogging engines out there and Nokia is only supporting 2. I don’t like that. If I was the CEO of Six Apart I would love this since many people would be opening up a blog just to be able to share their content, but what about those people who won’t use the blogging features on their Nokia products simply because their platform isn’t compatible?

PR Number 7: Nokia 6131 NFC phone taps into mobile payment, ticketing and local sharing

NFC is freaking cool no doubt about it, and it’s in the early stages, but if it has any chance of taking off then Nokia should work together with the rest of the handset manufacturers and credit card companies to produce a standard which everyone can implement.

For everyone who loves Samsung phones, you try telling them they have to switch to a Nokia to have the ease of use of NFC.

Standards are a good thing, and I don’t see NFC taking off stateside until consumers start thinking that NFC is something all cell phones do, not just Nokia phones.

PR Number 8: Nokia and Yahoo! Extend Relationship to Bring Yahoo! Go for Mobile 2.0 to Nokia Devices

So it’s an application that people can throw on their phones and sooner rather than later will be built in to the Nokia 6103, 6131, and 5300. What about S60?

PR Number 9: Free Yourself with Nokia’s Fun New Bluetooth Headsets

Check if out if you’re interested in the new Nokia BH-100, BH-201, and BH-301 headsets which are now launched.

This is more of a media blog (pictures and video) then text, but hey I’m not complaining! See images from the secret party Nokia (NYSE: NOK) held for its employee’s, and video shot on the new N93i!

Nokia’s Pekka Pohjakallio speaks about the iPhone, N series and WiFi

By Stefan Constantinescu on Sunday, January 14th, 2007 at 5:50 PM PST
In CES 2007

Some quotes of interest:

"We have been preaching the message of converged multimedia in one device, with lots of use cases and a good experience for the whole life of Nseries. And now Apple (NSDQ: AAPL) have come and said basically the same thing, even if they have implemented some things differently."

"The best company will win in the end, so I think it’s good news for us. It’s not a threat, although of course it’s hard competition, but that usually makes you perform better yourself."

"From now on, all the Nseries will have Wi-Fi."

"We’re not going to have any proprietary jacks any more."

Symbian Freak gives his impressions after 36 hours with the N93i

By Stefan Constantinescu on Saturday, January 13th, 2007 at 9:44 PM PST
In CES 2007

Negative Points:

  • No fingerprint-secure finish, so keep your polishers ready
  • NO MINI-USB AND 3,5mm AUDIO JACK!
  • Small, kinda useless external screen
  • keypad is hard to press
  • Flash is there, but too less powerful
  • Display part had way too much space

Positive Points:

  • Newer, slimmer design with mirror finish
  • Protection for miniSD slot and pop-port improved big time
  • Joypad (!?) has gone for cam usage and got replaced by an excellent joystick
  • Newer, slimmer keypad
  • Colours are now 16 Mio. instead of 262k
  • Flickr Video Uploads
  • Camera Improvements overall
  • Light Indicator for charging/missed calls/sms

Source: Symbian Freak

Trust me when I tell you the N93i feels so much more solid in the hand than an N93. Sadly I definitely, 100%, do not like the mirror coating.
