BlackBerry to launch a total of 6 devices this year

The newly launched BlackBerry Z10 and Q10, which will be available soon, won’t be the only devices running BlackBerry 10 for long. According to a leaked roadmap, the Canadian company is preparing to launch a total of 6 devices this year. So in addition to the two announced phones, we should see 4 additional models. One of them will be a tablet, though we’re not sure whether this will be the rumored 10-inch BlackBerry PlayBook or just an update to the existing PlayBook. The roadmap suggests such a device will Read more

We’ve already heard that BlackBerry Q10 is coming to the UK and now we have the first carrier announcing plans to sell it. It’s O2, which wowed to start offering the QWERTY keyboard-equipped smartphone at some point in May. Price was not unveiled but knowing that the unlocked unit will (at least initially) go for 530 GBP, we tend to believe O2 will give away the Q10 to anyone willing to sign-up for a two-year contract with around 30 GBP/month tariff. Google’s Eric Schmidt uses a BlackBerry, criticizes iPad mini for being ‘too small’

Google chairman and former CEO Eric Schmidt admitted to using a BlackBerry as his primary smartphone in an interview with Guardian at the Activate conference. One might assume someone with a high ranking at Google would be using an Android phone, but that’s apparently not the case. Schmidt says the main reason for using his BlackBerry is his love of the keyboard. Plenty of Android phones — probably with more functionality than that of a BlackBerry — also have physical keyboards as well, but hey, the guy likes what he likes. Read more

BlackBerry: We haven’t failed the UK government security standards; The Guardian is misleading the public

BlackBerry has denied reports that its latest mobile platform and BlackBerry Z10 have failed to meet British government security requirements. The Guardian pretty much invented the story, saying that BlackBerry 10 and the BlackBerry Balance software failed to meet the same security requirements that BlackBerry 7.1 met in December last year. BlackBerry obviously denied the story saying that these reports are “both false and misleading.” What should’ve been the reputable publication pulled its original story in the meantime. BlackBerry said that its platform remains the only one approved for “restricted” Read more

BlackBerry 10 will have 100,000 apps by the end of this month

RIM BlackBerry is looking to hit and surpass the 100,000 apps mark by the end of this month. According to the company’s CMO, Frank Boulben, BlackBerry 10 was launched “with the highest number of apps,” namely 70,000 titles, and adding an additional 30,000 apps shouldn’t be a problem. Sure enough, many of these are Android ports, but they work like “true” native apps. Boulben added that there is significant interest from developers, with the series of BlackBerry Jam events around the world driving “increased momentum in the developer community”. One Read more

As part of its efforts to get as many developers on board as possible, BlackBerry is giving away a number of “special edition” BlackBerry Z10 units to select developers willing to port their apps to the new platform. What’s unique about this version of the device is that it comes in red and that only 12,000 are available, each having its own number. The cable charger and headphones are the standard black, though.
