Windows Phone 8 growth has risen in European markets, mostly capturing customers who have never purchased a smartphone. “As iOS and Android continue to battle it out for … Read more
The PC market is changing rapidly, with notebook prices expected to hit $200 in the near future. Many of these devices will be running Android instead of Windows 8, according to CNET. Dadi Perlmutter, the chief product officer of Intel said that notebooks in the $200 price range will be running mostly Android on Intel’s Atom mobile processor, the same processor that graces many a Netbook. “We have a good technology that enables a very cost-effective price point,” Perlmutter said. “The price of Windows 8 laptops depends on how Microsoft … Read more

Amazon has apparently acquired a Siri-like app called Evi in a deal worth some $26 million, TechCrunch has revealed. The acquisition is far from being official and we still wait for the press release issued by any of the two parties. That, however, hasn’t stopped the online retail giant from replacing Evi’s directors with its own legal representative in the UK. Evi, in case you wonder, was developed by True Knowledge, a British startup with a natural language search engine developed in university labs. They’ve licensed Nuance’s voice recognition technology … Read more

The poor, underperforming Wii U took another hit today. Wedbush Securities analyst and gaming industry guru Michael Pachter commented today that the Wii U’s sales would continue to drop, and not even a price reduction could save it. “The only key hardware device to underperform our expectations was the Wii U and its fortunes appear unlikely to improve for several months, even if Nintendo decides to drop price, as there are an insufficient number of core titles that are generating interest in the console. We think that core gamers are … Read more
Looks like Canada’s mobile market is set for consolidation. The rumor is that TELUS is in the midst of talks to acquire Mobilicity, with the idea to get an additional spectrum, though adding more customers could also help justify the cost of acquisition. The problem, however, is that Mobilicity’s owners (or that’s managers?) may not like the deal as they’ve recently left the Canadian Wireless Telecommunications Association, accusing the industry group of being a puppet for bigger players. Moreover, even if TELUS gets Mobilicity’s spectrum, the rules prevent it from … Read more
Almost missed this… but since it’s fairly important, we’re going with it even if we’re a few days late. Business social network LinkedIn acquired Pulse, the company behind the popular Pulse News reader which is available for iOS and Android devices. Pulse was started in 2010 as a class project at Stanford’s d.school to create the best-possible mobile news reader. Little they know that at one point this side project will emerge as a major app/service, used by some 30 million users all around the world. The application will keep … Read more
Yesterday we’ve told you that Google is looking to acquire WhatsApp, a popular messaging app/service that works across platforms. That apparently ain’t gonna happen with the company’s head of business development Neeraj Arora saying they’re not holding sales talks with the search giant, and declining to comment further. This isn’t the first time WhatsApp is a subject of the “acquisition rumors.” Back in December, we thought they will be acquired by Facebook, but as you know – nothing has happened. The way I see it, Google isn’t that much interested … Read more
Japanese handset makers have seen better days. Just when we reported that Panasonic may be looking for a buyer for its mobile phone business, another company has apparently also found itself in the same position. It’s NEC, which may be in talks to sell its mobile phone division to Lenovo as we speak. The Japanese company has been losing money on its phone sales for two years and now it wants to do something about it. And since it already has a partnership with Lenovo in a joint venture to … Read more
STMicroelectronics and Ericsson agreed to close their loss-making mobile chip joint venture ST-Ericsson. The business will be divided with some 1,600 jobs expected to be lost in the process. The company experienced a major drop in orders from top customer Nokia as the phone maker lost market share to other handset makers, namely Apple and Samsung. Additionally, ST-Ericsson had tough time competing with chip makers from Asia, as well as phone vendors like Samsung which are now making their own chips. Under the plan, Ericsson will keep around 1,800 employees … Read more
