In this age of rapid technological innovation, it is easy to become a little jaded and take things for granted. Take processing power for instance, which has become increasingly more complex, developing at a pace that even Moore would be astonished at. A blog post from NVIDIA today details just how hard the Tegra team worked on readying its amazing Tegra 4i for its appearance at MWC 2013 in February of this year. The Tegra 4i would be NVIDIA’s first microprocessor with a built-in modem, utilizing “soft modem” technology that … Read more
Touch-based input is cool but what’s even better is mind control. Just imagine the possibilities of just thinking about an app to fire-it up. That’s exactly what Samsung along with the University of Texas’ assistant professor of electrical engineering Roozbeh Jafari is working on. Once completed, the system would allow users to don a cap filled with EEG electrodes to control apps and everything else on the phone/tablet’s screen. The Samsung Galaxy Note 10.1 tablet is used in the prototype setting, allowing users to open an app and make selections … Read more
Sumit Dagar is a (great) man behind the world’s first smartphone for the blind, which will launch soon in India. Using a grid of pins that move vertically to form Braille letters, this device has the potential to open a whole new world for the visually impaired. The phone’s “touchscreen” is capable of elevating and depressing the contents it receives to transform them into “touchable patterns.” The magic happens thanks to the Shape Memory Alloy technology using metals capability to remember the original shapes, and expand and contract to after … Read more

Japan Display is hoping that some handset maker will try to differentiate its next flagship smartphone by making it slightly bigger than competing (current) 5-inch screen devices. Their latest product is a 5.2-inch full HD (1,920×1,080 pixels) panel and as I’m writing this, it’s unclear which OEM will launch a smartphone (or that’s a phablet) with such a big screen. Here’s what the new display panel is all about: The new panel was developed by combining white OLED devices and color filters (CFs), while the pixel structure is composed of … Read more
Bell and Virgin Mobile have already announced that their LTE network(s) will reach about 70% of the Canadian population, covering some 24 million people. And while you may be waiting to learn which markets they’ll hit, the two carriers prepared neat maps, showing their expansion plans. As you can see from these two links, Bell and Virgin are about to add many markets in Eastern Canada, as well as Saskatchewan and parts of Alberta. We hope you’ll find yourself “covered” if you’re still lacking the LTE signal in the city … Read more
If you’ve been looking for a Kindle Fire HD with a few more connectivity options, you’re in luck. This Friday, AT&T will be offering up Amazon’s Kindle Fire HD 8.9 with LTE in tow. While contracts for tablets aren’t a favorite of ours, customers looking to nab the 32GB Kindle Fire HD 8.9 with a new two-year contract will receive a $150 discount, bringing the cost of the $399 tablet down to $249. AT&T is the first carrier to offer the Kindle Fire HD with LTE, which will bring the same … Read more
Bigger screens require more power, and more power means bigger batteries. As I’m writing this, handset makers are shipping high-end smartphones and phablets with 3,000 mAh batteries that can take us through the day. That, however, is not enough for many users who demand at least two days of battery life from their devices. To tackle this problem, a number of companies are working on innovative battery technologies, one of them being Hitachi Maxell, which says it has found the way to pack 60% more capacity onto the same size … Read more
Shortly after the unveiling of the new Samsung Galaxy S4, we found out that Samsung would be going with a Snapdragon 600 in lieu of its new Exynos 5 Octa for its release of its Galaxy S4 variant, the GT-I9505. This puzzling news came with no explanation, leaving many to speculate that perhaps the Exynos 5 did not have support some LTE bands that are so crucial to 4G networks worldwide. Samsung is releasing two versions of the Galaxy S4, the GT-I9500 and the GT-I9505. Model GT-I9505 runs a Snapdragon 600 SoC, while … Read more
