It looks like eBay
is finally starting to put their Skype acquisition to good use. Skype has announced plans to launch a VoIP compatible mobile phone on UK-based wireless network, 3. The plan is to launch a handset that both works on 3’s wireless network to make traditional mobile phone calls and is able to make free VoIP phone calls over an internet connection. All VoIP calls will be made through Skype’s network and will be free of charge.
Details are slim at the moment, but we’re betting the “Skype Phone” will be a mid-range handset with a built-in VoIP client and possibly a WiFi connection to facilitate the VoIP calls.
With Verizon Wireless and AT&T stocking up on high-end phones capable of making VoIP calls on their own, we don’t see how Skype’s entry into the mobile space will have any significant effect. Still, we’ll keep an eye on it for you guys.
