The first-generation iPhone was essentially cast aside when the iPhone 3G hit market. As the ugly-duckling of the iPhone lineup, the original iPhone was left to suffer an extended decline into obsolete-dom. But, with the introduction of the latest iPhone flagship, the iPhone 3GS, Apple isn’t putting its iPhone 3G out to pasture. Instead, Apple will relegate the current-generation iPhone 3G to entry-level status as a $99 8GB iPhone 3G. It seems all those rumors of a cheaper-priced iPhone coming down Apple’s product pipeline were more fairly spot on.
Rather than kill off the iPhone 3G market, Apple has apparently decided to milk any revenues still trapped in the iPhone 3G. Starting today, June 8th, Apple is shipping the 8GB iPhone 3G in Black and White color schemes for the almost unbeatable price of $99. The new iPhone 3GS starts at $199 for the 16GB model, and costs up to $299 for the 32GB model. That would put the iPhone 3G in a good position to undercut many of the iPhone’s competitors, giving the iPhone brand an edge in an increasingly crowded market.
What non-iPhone owner out there wouldn’t at least briefly consider a $99 iPhone 3G?
