OmniVision has just announced the OV14810 and OV14825 image sensors. The OV14825 is a 1/2.33 inch sensor designed to be put into mobile phones and can provide 14.6 megapixels of questionable image quality, optics matter people, and 1080p video at 60 frames per second. It’s going to be a while until we see any sort of devices hit the market with these things, but with mass production starting in Q2 2010 at least we know they’re not going to be that far off. The Japanese will have this before anyone else. Don’t think it’s easy to just pop one of these suckers into any old camera too, you’re going to need fast memory and either a wicked fast application processor or dedicated DSP to handle the processing.
