Again we have a story involving a small mobile operator, which (like other smaller companies) we like supporting. It’s PlatinumTel, the 3G prepaid and pay as you go carrier, which has announced that it is expanding its service to Florida. More precisely, they are bringing their contract-free offering to Miami, Jacksonville and Orlando.
Those unfamiliar, myself included, should know that PlatinumTel is offering an unlimited talk and text plan for $50 per month. In addition, customers can add unlimited Web data for $10 a month, and additional minutes after a $5 monthly minimum buy.
With the mobile space heating up, we’ve no doubts the consolidation of the industry is approaching. We’ve talked about potential merger (or that’s acquisition) between MetroPCS and Leap Wireless (Cricket), but that’s just the beginning. What about other smaller players? I’m assuming they’ll also be affected as their shareholders see the room for growth is shrinking. PlatinumTel may be one of the targets and as soon as the market rebounds I’m sure we’ll read more about the wide industry consolidation. Stay tuned…
