South Korea’s two largest mobile operators, SK Telecom and Korea Telecom (KT), are apparently looking for a possible joint venture deal in Poland. According to a report on Polish website, thenews.pl, the two companies are looking to either acquire the country’s fourth-placed 3G specialist P4 (Play), or grab a piece of the market leading Polkomtel, which has state owned investors such as electricity utility PGE (21.85%) and oil firm PKN Orlen (24.39%) — which on their end are looking to offload their stakes in the operator.
According to Wireless Intelligence data, Polkomtel’s Plus is the country’s largest mobile operator with an estimated 14 million connections at the end of last year, representing 32% of the market. Orange holds the second place with 13.7 million, Era is the third with 13.5 million, and P4’s Play – fourth with 2.9 million connections.
As a sidenote, Play has recently announced it is looking for new investment. The company started operations in 2007, and is now the largest 3G operator in Eastern Europe…
