It’s not like every day that we have a Chinese company opening a new factory outside of China. This is especially true if we’re talking about electronics — I’m not aware of a single company from the “world’s fastest growing economy” that has set up an electronics manufacturing plant outside of China.
Enter China Wireless Technologies (CWT), Hong Kong-list handset maker, which is planning to open a handset assembly plant in India by 2012. The plan is to do this through its local subsidiary, Coolpad Communications, in an investment worth about Rs 300-400 crore, which is $65-$86 million.
Moreover, even before the new plant starts working, China Wireless Technologies will open research centres in Delhi and Mumbai by next year.
The Chinese company currently has R&D centres in its domestic market only, and I assume the idea is to take advantage of the local skilled labor and eventually further strengthen ties with Reliance, CWT’s local carrier partner.
Once operational, the new factory will most likely make CDMA dual mode handsets…
