TD-LTE technology, which is also known as LTE’s unpaired version, is getting an increased traction these days. China Mobile wants to try it out, there are some deployments in Taiwan, Qualcomm is interested to use it in India, and there is also interest gathering in the U.S. On top of that, now we have the almighty Ericsson (when it comes to telcos infrastructure) testing the technology in Ireland.
The Swedish giant carried out tests in the 2.3GHz band using a license issued under Irish regulator ComReg’s test and trial licensing programme. The idea was to see whether TD-LTE can “provide high-speed broadband services which can be used to support services such as high-definition TV, video conferencing and many others.”
We’ve no idea what happens next, but I’m sure other vendors will keep their eyes wide open, looking for ways to steal some of Ericsson’s newly gathered knowledge and eventually trial TD-LTE themselves.
