Akamai is acquiring mobile services platform provider, Velocitude, in a move to “further its strategic position in the mobile market.” More precisely, Akamai will add mobile content transformation functionality to its existing suite of cloud services for optimizing web content and applications, and the delivery of HD video and secure e-commerce to mobile devices.
Analysts predict that the number of global Internet mobile users will surpass global desktop Internet users in the next five years, and the commerce is expected to grow to $24 billion by 2015. By adding Velocitude’s mobile platform to its product portfolio, Akamai plans to deliver content to today’s mobile phones without requiring the creation of separate websites or infrastructure dedicated to mobile content.
In other words as more and more people start access Internet from their mobile phones, new bandwidth will be required. With the acquisition of Velocitude, Akamai wants to make sure they stay in the game when this happens…
