HTC just hit us with some cool news, as its stellar Android-powered HTC Desire will soon coming to the U.S. markets.
While it wasn’t very specific, HTC said it would be coming to “select regional operators beginning in August” and we already know that one of these will be U.S. Cellular. This should instantly become the flagship handset for those users as the Desire is essentially a Nexus One with Sense UI.
The Desire rocks a 3.7-inch WVGA AMOLED display that is quite nice, a 1 GHz Snapdragon processor for all your multitasking needs, a 5-megapixel camera, Android 2.1 and all the connectivity options you’d expect from a device of this class. The Sense UI puts a prettier face on the device but some say it leads to a slower experience and can get in the way of faster OS updates (like Android 2.2, or “Froyo“).
It’s unclear if other regional carriers will get this device but we should know more soon. One thing is for sure: HTC is killing it. This company was a small, behind-the-scenes player a few years ago but it is rocking the smartphone space. It first rose to prominence on the backs of Windows Mobile but Android is really helping to put it over the top.
The company now has at least one Android device on every major carrier. There’s the Droid Incredible and Droid Eris on the Verizon Wireless, the EVO 4G and Hero on Sprint Nextel, the myTouch 3G Slide on T-Mobile and the recently-announced Aria on AT&T (look for an unboxing of that one soon, friends). Getting on the regional carriers will just strengthen the brand and get more people used to its devices.
No wonder Apple is trying to kill it in court with patent battles. HTC is fighting back though, as it has filed a counter suit against the iPhone maker regarding mobile patents.
