Well, we knew the HTC Desire was coming to multiple regional carriers but it didn’t take Cellular South long to claim this cool-looking Android device.
Users on Cellular South will be getting quite a powerful handset, as the device is essentially a Nexus One with HTC’s Sense software layered on top. That means you’ll be getting a nice 3.7-inch AMOLED screen, a 1 GHz Snapdragon processor, a 5-megapixel camera and all the connectivity options (WiFi, GPS, Bluetooth, 3G) you’d expect from a device of this class.
It will rock Android 2.1, so you’ll be able to make calls, send and receive e-mails and download apps from the Android Market. It also has the Sense UI on top and this makes subtle software tweaks to make the little, green robot more pleasing to the eye.
“We’re excited about adding the HTC Desire to our expanding line-up of Android-powered advanced touchscreen smartphones,” said Kevin Hankins, chief operating officer of Cellular South, in a prepared statement. “This device takes Android to a whole new level with HTC Sense and a platform that optimizes the rich media experience for news, the mobile web, music and video applications.”
The Android handset will also be coming to U.S. Cellular but there’s no word on pricing or availability yet. I would expect it to be on the store shelves no later than August.
Regardless of when the Desire hits, it’s another sign that HTC is doing well in the U.S. market. The handset maker used to not be known much by consumers, as it made its living off making handsets for other companies like Sony Ericsson. That has changed though, and its Android lineup is pretty sweet.
Besides the iPhone 4, the most lusted-after handsets are all made by HTC. The company can’t make enough Droid Incredible units to keep up with demand and the EVO 4G is flying off the shelves, too.
