IBM has opened a new software development laboratory – the IBM Mass Lab, in Massachusetts, U.S., employing 3,400 people focused on software development around enterprise mobile computing. Among the key topics which Lab researchers will work on include IBM’s Network Sciences initiative that concentrates on self-configuration and self-healing of networks, plus 4G network-focused enhanced network analytics. In addition, IBM researchers will also deal with specific mobile computing advances in healthcare, retail and finance.
“We’ve been steadily investing in this space for more than a decade, both organically and through acquisition,” said Steve Mills, IBM Software Group’s senior VP and group executive.
In addition to the new lab, the Big Blue also launched new solutions for the mobile enterprise market:
- Intelligent Site Operations – a combination of analytics software and services that enable real-time remote management of basestations and basestation sites, including monitoring of antennas, power, air conditioning/heating and back-up.
- WebSphere CEA Mobile Widgets – that help a retailer navigate their customers through their mobile website.
- Finally, IBM also announced the extension of its Lotus Notes email and collaboration platform for Android devices.
The end goal, according to Mills, is to help IBM’s enterprise clients deliver greater intelligence to their mobile workforces… We salute to that goal and honestly can’t wait to see the first fruits of IBM’s big take on the mobile market.
