Verizon Explains Mysterious Motorola Droid X Shipments

If you were scratching your head about the Motorola Droid X shipments that went out early, Verizon is ready to fess up. While most users weren’t scheduled to get their handsets until July 15, some lucky customers got their Droid X smartphones almost a week early. No one really knew why and it was difficult to track down the causes of the error. Either way, I’m sure none of the lucky users were complaining, but perhaps those who were waiting eagerly felt a bit of envy.

Verizon says that customers who placed orders through customer care were able to get their orders due to an error in the system. VZW customer service says:

I have also confirmed the reports that you have referenced about customers receiving these devices prior to the 15th. This was unfortunately due to a system error, allowing very few customers to receive this device prior to July 15; however, these devices cannot be activated until the phone is officially released on the 15th. I truly apologize for any concerns this may have caused.

According to the customer service rep who issued that statement, those Droid X handsets won’t be eligible for activation until July 15, which is likely a load of crock. If these were new customers, or customers who were porting their numbers over, there is no way Verizon would just let these devices sit like bricks before considering activation in the name of fairness.

At any rate, the official launch is just days away and a little slip up like this is surely forgiveable. The slick new Android handset has been rated pretty high by our own staff and definitely holds its own against the HTC EVO 4G and, in many ways, even the iPhone 4.

How many of you tried ordering this device, and were you bothered that others had better luck than you did?
