Again we have a nice usage of mobile technology in health services…
Jennifer Dyer, MD, MPH — which is an endocrinologist at Nationwide Children’s Hospital in Columbus, Ohio — has developed an iPhone app for adolescent diabetes patients to remind them about their treatment activities.
The new application comes on the heels of a pilot study that examined how SMS can be used to remind patients about their personal treatment activities. The study finding were positing, resulting in an increase in overall treatment adherence and improved blood glucose levels.
Later on, Dyer applied for an internal grant to test the app. She said: “This form of communication allows for real-time health management, which is extremely valuable for patients that suffer from a chronic illness like diabetes.”
Once available to the wider public, the application will allow endocrinologists to send personalized, automated text messages to multiple patients at a specific time.
Love the idea, as it’s especially suitable for adolescent diabetes patients who heavily rely on text messaging… 🙂
