According to a new survey from Bitkom, at least 10 million Germans regularly access the internet via their mobile phones, representing about 17% of the total mobile subscriber base in the country.
Of the total number, around 8 million visit websites (13% of all mobile phone owners), 4 million write e-mails (7%) while 4 million use downloadable apps (7%).
Unsurprisingly, mobile Internet is especially popular among the young — a quarter of 14 to 29-year-olds use mobile Internet functions: 24% of them visit websites, 14% write e-mails and 13% use mobile apps.
Likewise, the decisive thrust has been the increasing proliferation and availability of smartphones. In that sense, Bitkom forecasts that the current year will see sales of about 8 million smartphones in Germany or about one third of the total mobile phone sales.
Commenting on the survey findings, Bitkom board member René Schuster said it clearly: “The mobile Internet has made the breakthrough in the mass market.”
