If you “got get drunk,” have we got an app for you. The Bartab app is launching this Thursday (August 26) and the Apple iPhone and Android program will enable you to send vouchers for real-life drinks for only $1.
The concept is simple: use the app to buy a drink for a friend for $1, send it to them and they show the bar the digital ticket to get that tasty, adult beverage. The service works in over 100 bars and restaurants in the Los Angeles, New York and San Francisco area and the company is working on rolling it out to more markets.
“Bartab is a completely new kind of service that demonstrates the true power of social gifting,” said Steve Johnson, CEO of Webtab, in a prepared statement. “We don’t send virtual beers to people, we enable you to send your friend a real, frosty, thirst-quenching drink from a real bar, and people are excited by how fun and easy it is to use.”
It’s definitely an interesting idea and it uses Facebook to do the heavy lifting on the social side of things. I’m literally drooling at the possibilities of tying the Bartab app into Facebook Places. Imagine that cute gal you’ve been Face-stalking pops up at a nearby bar, this app could eventually enable you to buy her a drink and save a few bucks at the same time.
Why would the venues hop on board $1 drinks? Well, I’m fairly certain most people don’t just go into a bar to buy one drink, so getting you into the location is already half the battle.
The service is launching this week and we feel that it is our duty to test it out. Bartab is having some launch parties tomorrow and you can check out this Facebook page for details and to reserve your spot.
