The Museum of Modern Art, arguably one of the finest museums in the world, and one of my old favorite places to hang out at as a child after school, has released an iOS application that’s pretty much the entire museum in your pocket. You get to see which art is on what floor, find out the opening hours, and even listen to audio tours for free using your own personal headphones rather than sharing something that’s been passed around to hundreds of people.
If you’re ever in New York City, do yourself a favor and visit this place. Even if you’re not into art, a day spent at the MoMA will turn you into a culture buff who craves more out of life than the occasional woman and juicy steak. It’s a free application, and as far as I know you can grab it regardless of which country you’re in.
The video below runs through all the features and gives you an idea of what the application is like to use. It’s a bloody shame it isn’t available for Android or BlackBerry devices, but you never know. Time has a way of fixing these things, especially since all the Android phones sold across multiple vendors are soon due to outsell the Jesus Phone from Cupertino.
What’s your favorite museum? Do they have a mobile website or mobile application? Let me know in the comments below, especially if you’re in Europe. I already spend far too much time Googling the art at my local museums than enjoying it. An app that would let me favorite the pieces I like and then read up on them later would be, for lack of a better phrase, da bomb. Get on that MoMa, I didn’t see that as one of your features.
