If combining “location-based service” with “dating site” sounds like a wet dream to you, then you should check out the Wingman app for the Apple iPhone.
The Wingman Apple iPhone app lets you check-in to location – there’s Foursquare integration- and it lets you know how many other single people are at the venue. Or, at least how many single people with the Wingman app are at the location. The goal is to make a connection via the app and then move that over to the real life.
As fate would have it, I was speaking with a local developer about a similar app last night. My main concern was how do you keep this service from just being filled with creepy guys?
Additionally, there could be huge issues with privacy, particularly if some creepy guy just wants to stalk one of the ladies who enters the bar. Yeah, it may be a bit sexist of me to automatically assume the dudes are the ones who will cause problems but whatever – We know the truth.
It looks like there are some features which could help mitigate the creep factor. When you check in with Wingman, you get an anonymous message which says someone at that location wants to mingle. You then get to choose from a series of photos and if you like the person’s appearance, then you get to chat via the mobile program.
So, you can use this program to go into a bar, see if there’s someone you’re attracted to and then you get to chat with them in the mobile program. You could also grow a pair and talk to that person you’re attracted to because you’re in the same bar but some may prefer the comfort of an app. It’s always a bit nerve wracking to approach a stranger but isn’t that what the booze is for?
The Wingman Apple iPhone app is free and it will be launching in Seattle with some drink specials at certain locations.
I’d try it out but I’m too busy playing Angry Birds at the bars. That’s what the ladies like.
