It’s not every day you get to see not-so-high-end phones like the Nokia 5230 Nuron getting ridiculously overclocked. The Nokia 5230, or for you American folk, the Nuron for T-Mobile, has had its guts twisted so tight it’s running faster than many had imagined was even possible. 800 MHz. That’s pretty fast for an OS that hardly needs that kind of speed.
Below you’ll see a video of the operation happening. It’s a bunch of jumping from one application to another, but you’ll definitely see a new clock speed reported in the system information, so at least the point was made. We’re not just how much this will affect battery life, as going from a measly 434 Mhz in a stock Nuron to 800 MHz is definitely nothing to scoff at, and will certainly drain the battery much faster than stock. Now if only the phone and its OS were more exciting so we could really enjoy taking advantage of that extra speed.
Props to this guy for figuring out how to do this. This must have been a side project of some sort, since I really don’t see what someone would have wanted to work this long to overclock such a device. The 5230 has been around over a year, with the US getting it back in March. You can grab this thing for free at T-Mobile.com with a new two-year contract. It should be a decent companion for someone who doesn’t care about horsepower, and it’s only the Nokia device that Magenta carries with a (resistive) touch screen.
Despite all of the 5230’s shortcomings, it’s now a speed demon, and that makes it better in a lot of ways in our book. You should know that the overclock method is still in the testing phase, and isn’t available to the public. The video is just to show that it can be done. As time goes on, this may be much easier for those looking to overclock other Nokia Symbian devices down the road.
