Vopium, which we see as one of alternative VoIP service providers (it’s not Skype, Truphone or Google Talk after all), has improved its Android application and is now offering free calls to other mobile phones with Vopium on either WiFi or mobile data networks.
The main idea is to “find the lowest rate” for calls and text messages, either via regular calls on your mobile, 3G or WiFi network. International calls are made over Vopium’s servers whereas local calls are made using your phone (and your existing voice plan).
As an example, Vopium says that calls to any landline or mobile phone in Thailand cost just under three cents plus the local mobile rate — which makes it at about the same cost as a local call.
In addition, calls to other Vopium and Skype users are free, and there’s also support for instant messaging across instant and social networks, including Facebook, Windows Live Messenger, Google Talk, AIM, Yahoo, ICQ, Skype and Twitter.
