UPDATE: Looks like the rumor was too good to be true. I just received a note from the NHL’s PR department, and they tell me that the message sent was simply an error in customer service automation. They went on to confirm however, that an iPad app is on the way, but a release date isn’t known… yet.
Could it be that NHL Game Center Live is coming to the iPad? That’s the rumor I’ve heard, and I’m keeping my fingers crossed that it’s true.
According to a tipster over at AppAdvice.com, the National Hockey League has let it slip (on purpose, perhaps?) that the NHL GameCenter Live augmented streaming service will be available starting (wait for it)… October 7th! Wait a tick, that’s today! And the regular season starts today too… Imagine that? Very awesome!
As I’m writing this, I haven’t been able to find GameCenter Live in the App Store… Yet. But I’ll keep running the search. It’s gotta show up at some point, right? 🙂
You can take this with the usual grain-of-salt disclaimer, but below is the correspondence between AppAdvice tipster ‘Tony’ and the NHL regarding the app:
Dear Tony,
NHL Game Center Live will be available on the iPad starting October 7th.
If you have any further questions, please let us know.
Thank You,
NHL Customer Web Support
That’s a pretty clear and straightforward answer, no? Again, let’s hope this is true. With the 2010-2011 season getting underway today, it would make sense for the App to go live. In fact, I’m a little surprised it wasn’t launched in time for the pre-season. I know for a fact that an app like this (if it had been available earlier) would have been a must-have for anyone getting involved in a hockey pool for the coming year.
Apps like this will help hockey-hungry fans (like myself) take in as much hockey as one can take. NHL GameCenter will no doubt deliver awesome streaming video, stats, scores, news and a whole whackload more to those that want it.
Stay tuned for more, and hopefully we see it pop in the App Store at some point today!
