Good news, everyone! This evening, I learned that promo codes are now very available in all of Apple’s international app stores! Woohoo! I have to be honest, I never thought this day would come. But as I sit here, watching Sidney Crosby and the Penguins take on the struggling Toronto Maple Leafs, I’m one happy Canadian. In fact, I’m in my happy place.
So what does this mean for folks in the US? Absolutely nothing. You lucky folks have had promo codes from the start. Developers could easily shoot codes out to encourage reviews, or to simply gift a friend or colleague an app. Now, folks in Canada, the UK, Spain, Australia, and any other part of the world with iTunes is good to go. Let’s sit back, relax and watch as international app reviews skyrocket. I can guarantee this.
Below is the official statement from Apple on worldwide promo code availability:
Your promo code distribution is no longer limited to U.S. customers. Promo codes in iTunes Connect can now be redeemed by all App Store customers worldwide. Your Team Agent can request 50 codes per version of your app in iTunes Connect and your customers can redeem these codes in any App Store.
Sadly, as you can see in the terms above, it looks like Apple is sticking with their 50 promo code limit per release. Developers will have to be much more picky as to whom they share their codes with. It’s a big world with a lot of websites out there… those promo codes are going to get gobbled up faster than ever.
A big *thumbs up* to Apple on this one. True, us internationals have been waiting ages and ages and ages for this… But I suppose better late than never is all I can say on this one.
