Whatever good you may have to say about the Xperia X10, hold onto it, as it’s probably been one of the most disappointing (though decently spec’d) Android smartphones around. But right now, it’s actually somewhat worth having due to one simple ROM. It’s an Android 2.3 Gingerbread preview ROM, and while other handsets are already alive and kicking with this ROM, we’re quite surprised that the X10 has already received it. I mean, who owns an Xperia X10 anyway?
Just like the other ROMs floating around, this Gingerbread ROM isn’t complete in any sense of the word. Instead, it offers a preview of what the update will bring to the table. For those who want to do even less work, search Gingerbread Launcher in the Android Market and see what you find.
While it seems like the X10 has all the internal guts to handle Gingerbread, Sony Ericsson is apparently still dealing with the challenges related to making an Android 2.1 Eclair update work on the device. Unless they decide to skip Froyo, the Sony Ericsson dev team is quite a ways behind.
Either way, if you’ve got a rooted X10 hanging around, you may just want to check out this Android 2.3 Gingerbread preview ROM for kicks. Since it’s built off the official Android 2.3 SDK, and not built from the actual Android OS source code, it’ll likely be sluggish and not ready for day-to-day use (hence the ‘its just a preview ROM’).
We’ll be waiting a little while before any decent custom Gingerbread ROMs begin to go live, and it’ll probably be even longer before the X10 can benefit from them. Plus, the only real Sony Ericsson device you should be concerned about running Gingerbread is the Playstation phone, so we suggest you start saving that couch change!
