Accenture has conducted a global survey among 1,000 respondents in ten markets — including the U.S., France, Spain, Italy, U.K., Germany, Brazil, Japan, China and India — to examine how mobile phones are affecting the retailer relationship. Here’s what they’ve found:

  • Smartphone users would find it useful to download money-off coupons to their phones (79%), and receive instant money-off coupons as they pass by an item in a store (73%). On the similar note, Accenture has found that 48% of smartphone users have downloaded a coupon from their PCs.
  • 48% of conventional cell phone users plan to buy a smartphone in the next 12 months.
  • Many smartphone users said that they prefer using their mobile device (73%) rather than interacting with a store employee (15%) for simple tasks. Similarly, 71% favor using their smartphone to identify a store with a desired item in stock, while 17% would prefer to get that information by speaking to an employee.
  • 54% of smartphone owners worry that using smartphones will erode their privacy. Other voiced concerns include fear of losing the personal touch from store employees (59%) and that products would get more expensive (39%).
  • 69% of smartphone users are aware of smartphone applications from large retailers and 48% have downloaded at least one application.
  • 90% of consumers who have downloaded an application from a large retailer found it “very useful” or “useful”.
  • 56% believe smartphones will make the shopping experience more enjoyable.

I didn’t have the numbers, but I could’ve tell you the same – smartphones WILL change the way we shop and we love ’em for that! 🙂
