The Nexus S was released just last week and it’s receiving it’s already getting its first OTA update. This is a very minor update and you likely won’t notice much after installing the update, but we’re not complaining about what we hope to be the beginning of some rapid OTAs for the Nexus S.
So, what’s in the update, you ask? According to @PaulOBrien, the OTA includes changes in the Framework, the kernel, and the updated Google Maps app, which includes 3D buildings and offline maps support. That’s about it. We’re not sure if you’ll see any noticeable difference in anything other than Maps, but more power to Google for updating one of the best apps available for Android. We have no idea what changes were done to the kernel or the framework, but we’re pretty sure that the anything that was changes was fairly minimal as well.
When the Nexus One was released, similar OTAs were sent out to the device that seemingly did nothing noticeable, and now that the Nexus S is Google’s new baby, it’ll likely get the most attention with such updates. What we’re wondering is if the Nexus S will actually have Gingerbread for much longer. With Honeycomb not too far away, the NS is likely to be the first to receive some Honeycomb treatment before all the others.
Those of you who actually purchased the Nexus S likely don’t have many complaints on the software side of things, even if the hype made it seem like Gingerbread would be much more than it is. Hopefully whatever wishes you have with Gingerbread will be addressed with upcoming updates. We’ve been waiting on a few features that have failed to materialize. So Google, could you get on that? Thanks.
