Dual-core mobile processors strut
Whether it’s the LG Optimus S, the Motorola Xoom Android Honeycomb tablet or the BlackBerry PlayBook, having a dual-core processor is going to be a must for top-shelf mobile devices. This CES show should be the coming-out party for dual-core gadgets and the NVIDIA Tegra 2 chip should be the belle of the ball.
The Tegra 2 chip is expected to power the Optimus and Xoom and reports suggest that it is going to be the reference platform for Android Honeycomb, so we can look forward to many tablets utilizing this chip. We’ve also heard that the Motorola Olympus will be announced at CES by AT&T and this will be power by – you guessed it – the Tegra 2 chip. NVIDIA is holding a press conference at the event and it may even spill some details on the next generation of Tegra processors.
It’s not just the high end though, as Broadcom has introduced dual-core chips for mid-range Android phones and we may see some of those at CES, although I think it may be a bit too early. Still, it’s clear that the future of smartphones and tablets will rely on multi-core processors and we can’t wait to see if these devices truly deliver better performance without draining too much of the battery.
While tablets, 4G and dual-core phones will be our main focus at CES, this is the Super Bowl of tech shows, so we’ll be sure to find tons of cool mobile gadgets and apps. Keep it locked here for the latest news, live blogs of major events and the best coverage of the mobile side of CES.
