Verizon and AT&T iPhone square off in browser showdown

The Verizon and AT&T iPhone face off in the first-ever browser showdown between the two devices. The short but sweet video was shot by CNET during the Verizon press event and purports to reveal which wireless network is faster. It’s an interesting question that will be fully answered when the Verizon iPhone becomes available to the masses. Currently, AT&T’s HSPA network boasts of faster speeds than Verizon’s EV-DO network, but pure speed is only part of the story.

Faster theoretical speeds are only an advantage when they can be duplicated in real-life situations. AT&T, though faster on paper, has suffered from network problems that include slow data speeds and dropped calls. These problems began soon after the iPhone debuted on AT&T. Verizon, on the other hand, has long been considered Mr. Reliable among the wireless carriers. In a bit of self-promotion, Verizon even refers to itself in press releases as “the nation’s most reliable and largest wireless voice and 3G data network.”

Of course, the proof is in the pudding and CNET has served up a bowl-full of  the delectable desert for our enjoyment. Unfortunately due to time constraints, the video includes only one trial in which the two iPhones simultaneously load the New York Times website. Sorry folks, I am not going to spoil it for you. You are going to have to check out the video to find out which carrier came out on top.
