One January 14th, Apple launched its 10 billion download counter and now the App Store is finally creeping closer to this download milestone. The countdown is accompaneid by a promotion that will give a $10,000 iTunes gift card to the person who purchases the ten billionth app or submits a free entry form in the 10 billionth slot. According to calculations based on the average rate of app purchases, the 10 billion threshold will be crossed sometime Saturday.
Apple held a similar promotion for its one billion download milestone which was reached back in April 2009. This previous giveaway also included a $10,000 iTunes gift card and a handful of prized Apple hardware including a MacBook Pro, an iPod Touch, and a Time Capsule. This bountiful award went to 13-year old Connor Mulcahey who claimed the prize with the free download of Bump, a sharing app that lets you bump iPhones to transfer files.
If you are looking to be the lucky winner on Saturday, remember that the rate of purchases ususally increases at the end of these promotions so this number will jump dramatically when the end is approaching. Adjust your plans accordingly and best of luck if you are trying to snag that $10,000 prize.
