Gold Motorola Xoom tablets going to the Oscars

Yes, you’ll soon be able to walk into a Best Buy or Verizon store to pick up a Motorola Xoom tablet but if you are one of the select few who has been nominated for an Oscar or will host, you’ll get a special gold version of the Android 3.0 Honeycomb tablet.

Other than the gold backing, the Motorola Xoom tablet will be identical to the one you can buy but it won’t be as exclusive. The device rocks a 10-inch screen, dual-core processor, 3G connectivity that will soon be upgraded to 4G LTE, multiple cameras, Bluetooth and more.

One of the most interesting things about the Motorola Xoom tablet is that it will run the Android 3.0 Honeycomb operating system. This is the version of the software that has been optimized for these larger screens.

One of the things you’ll first notice about the Motorola Xoom tablet (gold or not) is the revamped interface. You can long press or hit the “+” button to bring up a smaller version of the home screens to drop on new widgets or apps. The Renderscript engine also means there will be smoother animations in apps and during transitions.

The gold Motorola Xoom tablet will be special to the Oscars but there will be a few versions to buy. The version which hits the U.S. market will come in all black but we saw the silver-backed version at the Mobile World Congress 2011 show that will land in the international markets.

Be on the lookout for some Oscars guide from the IntoMobile team – we’ll show you which apps will help you plan a good party and how to get the latest information at your fingertips. Until then, feel free to let me know what you think will will Best Picture in the comments below. I’m thinking “The King’s Speech.”
