Despite a tethered jailbreak solution for iOS 4.3.1 already available to those who want it, many would-be jailbreakers are undoubtedly waiting for an untethered solution. Who wants to be at a computer every time you need to reboot a jailbroken iPhone, iPod touch or iPad?
Developer Stefan Essen has created an exploit for an untethered jailbreak for iOS 4.3, but has no plans on developing a jailbreak tool with it. Instead, Essen handed the exploit over to the very capable iPhone Dev-Team. This doesn’t guarantee that a jailbreak will be developed any time soon, but one would have to imagine that it might be in the works since the Dev-Team already has the exploit in hand.
The iPhone Dev-Team is now testing the exploit, so we’ll have to sit and wait patiently to see what they decide to do with it. For you iPad 2 owners, no dice with this exploit, but perhaps one will be created in conjunction with what’s already out there. Otherwise, you might have to settle for the tethered jailbreak for now.
I can’t wait for the jailbreak to come out. I’d been stuck on a previous iOS version and hanging onto my jailbreak for as long as possible, but there are far too many apps I needed to update and/or download that weren’t compatible with any other software version than iOS 4.3 or higher. For those of you in the same boat, let’s hope it comes sooner than later. And for those of you who are patiently waiting with iOS 4.2.1 or lower, I salute you for your patience.
