Hack lets all Windows Phone users install NoDo update

Chris Walsh of Chevron WP7 fame has developed a new method that lets any Windows Phone user install the latest NoDo update to his or her handset. Microsoft released a support tool for Windows Phone that can be modified to force a handset to update to the pre-NoDo (#7008) and NoDo updates all in a single process. It will work across carriers and manufacturers so this is a party that all Windows Phone 7 owners can join.

The process for upgrading is relatively straight forward. Before you get started, you need to download the Microsoft support tool and the Chevron WP7 updater (its a console app, so make sure you are comfortable with running apps in the console before you start). You also need to find the version number of your OS to determine whether you need to install the pre-NoDo update or not. Once the two tools are installed and your version number is identified, then you can dive into the flashing process as described below:

  • Plug your phone in and wait 30 seconds.
  • Start the ChevronWP7.Updater.exe and follow the prompts to select your language and apply the update. This should kill the Zune service that launched when you connected your handset.
    • Note: If you’re updating from Version 7004, you need to run the Updater TWICE. You first need to apply the pre-NoDo update before you can flash to NoDo. The updater will detect your OS version and apply the correct update so all you have to do is remember to complete these steps twice to get to NoDo. When you are flashing to NoDo, the console tool will say “Updating you to NoDo” so you will know that this is the last step.
  • When complete, the tool should reboot your phone and you should have copy and paste.

One note of caution, to use the Chevron Updater to flash, you need to confirm that your language is included in the updater tool. If your language isn’t in the Chevron updater, do not use this tool to update your phone. If you give it a whirl give us a shout in the comments and let us know what you think of copy and paste on Windows Phone 7.
